Frequently Asked Questions

'All the world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming.' Helen Keller.

What happens in the first session?
I'll meet with you in my counselling room in Lewes, just outside of Brighton and Hove, in East Sussex. Our session lasts for 50 minutes. The purpose of the first meeting is to see whether we would like to work together. The therapeutic relationship is an important element in counselling and CBT and it's important that both therapist and client feel it is a good 'fit'. Sometimes I may not be the right person for you or sometimes I might not have expertise in the area in which you want to work and if so I'll try to suggest some other ways in which you might be able to find a therapist. Also in the first session I can help you to understand some of the differences between CBT and counselling and which one might be more suitable or possibly whether we might want to include elements of both in our work. The full session fee is charged for this and the session will last 50 minutes.

Are the sessions confidential?
Generally what you say to me in the room stays in the room or may be discussed with my supervisor who is also bound by strict rules around confidentiality. However there are some exceptions to this, mostly due to concerns around you being a danger to yourself or others or if I think you are going to commit a crime. Additionally if you disclose a historic crime such as sexual abuse as a child, then I may have to disclose in order to keep others safe. And also if I suspect you are involved in terrorist activity then I would also have to break confidentiality. Please ask in our first session if any of this is unclear.

How long do I need to see you for?
It is difficult to estimate how many sessions you might need. Often people commit to 6-12 sessions then we can review where you are at. Some clients prefer to work in a more open ended way or have more complex issues and so may require more sessions. Sessions last for 50 minutes usually at the same time each week. We will continually review our work to make sure that you are happy with how things are going.

What happens if I need to miss a session?
You need to give 48 hours' notice if you are going to miss a session otherwise full payment is required.
